One of the most loved mammals in Ireland, Hedgehogs were once a very common sight at night throughout the country. Unfortunately, I see more dead Hedgehogs on our roads these days than I see alive. Habitat loss, and the use of pesticides and slug pellets, have impacted greatly on our Hedgehog populations. Hibernating during the winter months, Hedgehogs are active at night from late spring into early autumn. This Hedgehog was photographed in an area close to the Phoenix Park, Dublin in July 2011.
