One of the largest and most colourful of our butterfly species, Silver-washed Fritillaries are found in deciduous woodlands and very mature gardens. Flying from late June to late August, these bright orange and black butterflies glide effortlessly along woodland clearings. The underwings are as beautiful as the upperwings with orange and black on the forewing, and pale green with silvery streaks on the hindwing (from which the species derives its name). This superb butterfly was photographed while feeding on Bramble flowers at Abbeyleix Bog, Co. Laois in July 2022.
