Green Hairstreak

A very small, colourful butterfly, Green Hairstreaks are found on wet bogs throughout the country. Flying from mid-April into early July, they are possibly under-recorded. In flight the upperwings are dull brown but, thankfully, when they land, they hold their wings upright revealing that rich emerald green underwing from which the species derives its name. This Green Hairstreak was photographed on Abbeyleix Bog, Co. Laois in June 2019.
