A very rare breeding bird in Ireland, Bearded Reedlings are named after the male’s dramatic face plumage (the females are plainer brown). Found in extensive reedbeds, this species became extinct as a breeding species in the early 1980’s. Then, in the very cold winter of 2010/11, small parties of birds were discovered at Tacumshin Lake, Wexford and have since expanded to other parts of Wexford and into south Wicklow. This male was photographed at Tacumshin Lake in November 2010.
