Within our rustic acre we aim to be as bird-friendly, bug-friendly and wildlife-friendly as possible, encouraging and nourishing all kinds of creatures including a large variety of birds, bats, butterflies, moths, dragonflies, grasshoppers, frogs, newts, rabbits, foxes, badgers, deer and more.
We welcome you to enjoy our surroundings and there are mown paths to guide you in several directions. One of those paths takes you to a private secluded outdoor picnic area for guest use only. We call it 'The Circle'. It's a circular patch of trimmed grass with rustic log seating & a fire pit, a lovely area to sit and relax at any time of day.
We reside on the ground floor with Suzie-dog & our two moggies (cats), Tigger & Loopy. We will effectively be your neighbours; we generally live a quiet life doing lots of walking and birding while hanging out with our furry & feathered family when we're home. You will have as much privacy as you would like, your space is very private.

We suggest that a car really is a must in order to make the most of beautiful Wicklow's wonderful offerings.
I had a wonderful experience bird watching with Eric Dempsey, his knowledge and enthusiasm is infectious. Eric and Hazel are great hosts, they made us so welcome to their beautiful home in a lovely setting. We stayed in the very comfortable and spacious apartment with all mod cons, ideal for birders who wish to go with Eric for a day out.
I have stayed at Coup de Coeur in the Loft Apartment on several occasions and prepared breakfast while I enjoyed watching coal tits, green finches and blue tits feeding just outside the window. Eric and Hazel have created a warm attractive space here. Also, a lot of attention to detail has gone into meeting the needs of a visitor on a practical level. I have always come away from a stay at the Loft Apartment feeling like a respected and honoured guest.
I have also taken part in some of Eric’s birding workshops at Coup de Coeur where the gardens are filled with birdlife. I have learned so much due to his easy interactive style of imparting his considerable knowledge. The workshop that stands out for me most was the autumn migration weekend…a real adventure… mainly spent out and about in Wicklow and Wexford. The highlights for me that weekend were at Carne, seeing a Merlin and watching what Eric calls the ‘transit lounge’ of birds in flight past the beach on their long journeys across oceans.
We were given the warmest of welcomes by Eric and Hazel on arrival at their gorgeous Swiss style home in a lovely woodland setting in Wicklow, yet adjacent to main roads and all other facilities.
The upstairs apartment is smart, comfortable and with great attention to detail, including a well stocked freezer, more gadgets than one would have at home, and we loved the little touch of delicious chocolate left on the pillows together with a spray of lavender!
This is a dream base for birdwatchers with Eric's enthusiasm ,expertise and knowledge of the best sites , guiding us on tours through this stunning part of Ireland. I just can't wait for a return visit!
We spent a wonderful few days in September 2015 staying in the fine accommodation provided by Hazel Johnston and Eric Dempsey close to the family farm where Hazel grew up in a lovely part of the Emerald Isle. We had met this fun couple the year before in rural France where we too have holiday accommodation, and shared a common passion - birding.
To spend time searching for and finding bird species with Eric is a joy. His knowledge and field skills are excellent, and after maybe 40 years experience in the area knows where and when to go. Check out his photographs; they leave no doubt as to his skills. I can also recommend reading one of his books - our trip coincided with the presentation of the latest - Don't die in Autumn - so we heard and enjoyed all the stories hot off the press!
Beside this we also found The Lodge an easy drive to Dublin, a great city, where we spent a day enjoying the galleries and museums - especially the Book of Kells, wonderfully presented.
